Scientists

Scientists are fundamental members of the Ocean Literacy Network, through their contributions to the development of the Network and instructional materials, and their ongoing use of the Network’s resources in their own work.

Many scientists offered their expert knowledge in developing and reviewing the Ocean Literacy Framework. Go to the Honor Roll to find out who was part of the process. Learn more about their involvement in the Development of the Framework.

The Ocean Literacy Network is valuable and relevant to the scientific community. Scientists can use the Ocean Literacy Framework to:

  • develop university courses
  • inform scientists’ broader impact activities
  • and provide the rationale for grant proposals

Vignette: Ocean Literacy Principles Influence Berkeley’s Introduction to Oceans Course

After learning about the Ocean Literacy Principles, University of California Berkeley’s professor Robert Rhew re-designed his 300-seat introductory oceanography course. The course is now structured around the Ocean Literacy Principles. Some principles are addressed in a single lecture, while other principles form the framework for a series of class sessions. Dr. Rhew, a professor in Earth and Planetary Science, found the Ocean Literacy Principles very helpful as he decided what he wanted his students to learn. Check out Dr. Rhew’s course syllabus PDFs before and after he structured the course around the Ocean Literacy Principles.

The Ocean Literacy Principles has inspired other science disciplines. Find out more about other science literacy principles here.
